SPIC GECL Ships First Batch of Green Ammonia to South Korea

According to CCTV News, 3,750 tonnes of green ammonia produced by SPIC Green Energy Co., Ltd. (GECL) at its Da’an project in Jilin Province arrived at Lianyungang Port in Jiangsu by land on July 28, before being loaded onto a vessel bound for South Korea.

The shipment marks GECL’s first green ammonia export since the Da’an project was commissioned on July 19, 2025.

Located in Da’an, Jilin Province, the project is a large-scale integrated wind-solar-green hydrogen-green ammonia demonstration project invested and developed by GECL, a subsidiary of State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC). With a planned total investment of approximately RMB 6.3 billion, the project includes 800 MW of wind power, 200 MW of solar PV, a water electrolysis hydrogen production facility capable of producing 32,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, and an ammonia synthesis unit with an annual production capacity of 180,000 tonnes of green ammonia. Construction began in March 2023, and the project was officially commissioned on July 19, 2025, making it one of China’s first large-scale green ammonia projects to establish a complete industrial chain.

The successful export demonstrates that the project's integrated value chain—from renewable power generation and water electrolysis hydrogen production to flexible ammonia synthesis, storage, logistics and export—has been fully established following its commissioning and operational ramp-up.

Notably, prior to this shipment, GECL had repeatedly stated on investor communication platforms that none of its green ammonia had been exported, indicating that production was primarily intended for the domestic market. The shipment of 3,750 tonnes of green ammonia to South Korea therefore represents a significant milestone in the company's export business.

The South Korean buyer is a consortium comprising Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, and Lotte Fine Chemical. In January 2026, the consortium launched the world's first demonstration project for pure ammonia-fueled and hydrogen-ammonia co-firing power generation, creating stable demand for green ammonia.

In September 2025, Envision Group exported 1,500 tonnes of green ammonia from its Chifeng wind-solar hydrogen-ammonia project to South Korea for KEPCO's hydrogen-ammonia co-firing power generation trials, marking China's first large-scale green ammonia export. With GECL's latest shipment, China's cumulative green ammonia exports to South Korea have now exceeded 5,000 tonnes.
