SHUOZHOU, China — Shuozhou, a major energy hub in northern China's Shanxi province, is accelerating its transition toward clean energy by building a comprehensive hydrogen industry supply chain. Capitalizing on its national energy revolution pilot status, the city is integrating renewable power with advanced manufacturing to set a regional benchmark for green transportation and industrial decarbonization.
Through strategic partnerships with leading academic institutions, multi-dimensional policy support, and infrastructure expansion, Shuozhou is pushing hydrogen technology into real-world applications across heavy-duty logistics, industrial manufacturing, and grid energy storage.

A key milestone in the city's hydrogen strategy is the breakthrough in fuel cell engine performance. At the Shuozhou Dual-Carbon Industry Research Institute—which features a production facility capable of manufacturing 500 hydrogen engines annually—a research team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University has achieved significant technological upgrades.
Shuozhou is overcoming core technological hurdles in hydrogen fuel cell engines through deep academia-industry partnerships. At the Shuozhou Dual-Carbon Industry Research Institute's 500-unit annual capacity plant, researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University have increased the engines' driving range from 400 km to 600 km and upgraded system power output by 100 to 200+ kW. Fleet testing shows vehicles with this system deliver a stable year-round range exceeding 600 km, even in extreme summer and winter climates.
By leveraging the city's vast wind and solar power resources for water-electrolysis hydrogen production, Shuozhou is transforming laboratory research into industrial-scale applications, paving the way for the widespread adoption of heavy-duty hydrogen commercial vehicles.
To support the fleet deployment, localized refueling infrastructure is rapidly coming online.
Construction of a major refueling station developed by Shuozhou Wenjing Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has entered its final commissioning stage. Steel structures, main piping, and core equipment—including compressors, hydrogen storage cylinders, and Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) purification units—have been fully installed and tested.
According to the project manager, the station is scheduled to pass final inspection and launch commercial operations by the end of this month. Once operational, the facility will be able to simultaneously support the daily refueling needs of 50 heavy-duty hydrogen trucks and 10 hydrogen buses.
Shuozhou is taking a systemic approach to cover the entire hydrogen value chain, spanning production, refueling, storage, transport, and application. The city is building a "Two Horizontal, Three Vertical" industry ecosystem encompassing green hydrogen generation, fuel cell deployment, gas purification, and electrolyzer manufacturing.
Having already completed a production line for 100 sets of fuel cells, Shuozhou is preparing for its next phase of expansion:
Manufacturing Expansion: Planning a new facility with a capacity of 5,000 fuel cell stacks per year.
Infra-Expansion: Adding two to three new hydrogen refueling stations across the city.
Fleet Rollout: Aiming to deploy 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks within four years under China's national hydrogen demonstration city cluster initiative.
By building an integrated industry-university-research model, Shuozhou aims to generate new productive forces and offer a replicable model for resource-dependent regions undergoing industrial transformation.
