SHENZHEN — The OOCL Wisdom, the world’s largest methanol dual-fuel container ship officially set sail on its maiden voyage from Shenzhen’s Yantian Port on July 20. Laden with exported home appliances, machinery, and light industrial goods, the vessel is bound for major European hub ports, including Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Hamburg in Germany. The milestone marks another major breakthrough in China’s design and construction of ultra-large clean-energy vessels.

Measuring nearly 400 meters in length with a maximum deadweight tonnage of 225,000 metric tons, the OOCL Wisdom is currently the largest methanol dual-fuel container ship in active commercial service globally, boasting a methanol-powered endurance range of up to 15,000 nautical miles.
Compared with traditional fuel-powered container ships, the green vessel offers substantial decarbonization benefits. Operating in pure methanol mode, the ship reduces sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions by approximately 95%, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 80%, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 15%.
